SAFE HOUSE
Yesterday a friend of mine invited me for a preview of the new Universal movie SAFE HOUSE. It´s a decent action movie with a lot of blood and metal but it´s not worth writing about it on an architectural blog. Also the architectural title is nothing that I would like to discuss rather the influence of new media on the movie industries. Not only is a part of the movie inspired by popular wiki-leak whistle blowing practice but what was most striking was the visual appearance of the movie. To both of us it seemed that the movie has a kind of INSTAGRAM esthetics to it.
Maybe movies always looked that way and we just found a new wording for it but I believe that the young director Daniel Espinosa adopted the popular esthetics in particular to this film. Also with a lot of graining there some kind of retro, high vibrancy effect.
Considering that the theory above is true and that instagram is a smart phone app that is merely a year old is striking how fast Hollywood is adopting to new trends, technologies and esthetics. I am wondering how long it will take until we see the first architectural renderings at competitions that will remind us if taken with our smartphone camera at the next corner.
An interesting article on the instagram effect can be read in the magazine online: http://www.wired.com/magazine/2011/12/st_thompson_instagram/
For the real hardcore architects the movie is featuring the Green Point Stadium in Capetown by German GMP architects.
