Martin Haas (Benisch Architects)
Welcome and short introduction to UPenn Studio Berlin: Airport Tegel - What´s next?
Matthias Rudolph (Transsolar) | Climate Informed Design
Matthias will present the role of climate engineering in the building process by exhibiting real world examples of the built environment, demonstrating how the recognition of outdoor as well as indoor climates can effectively inform design decisions. Understanding the interdependence of the built and natural environment, the impact of design decisions on qualities such as daylight, natural ventilation, air quality, thermal comfort as well as on environmental impact is essential.
Daniel Dendra (anOtherArchitect) | OccupyBerlin : When will cities we know be transformed by the net moment?
Daniel Dendra is discussing in a public lecture how social media and other technologies will change the face of our cities and will allow for more sustainable and social environments.

FUTURE ENVELOPE SYMPOSIUM 2011This year, the 5th time the future envelope symposium was held in the TU Delft hosted by the facade research group led by Ulrich Knaack and Tillmann Klein. This years topic was all about technology transfer.
It was a well visited event with about 150 guests and a lineup with international speakers from different fields of profession.
The conference was divided into four sessions, each followed by a discussion. Close contact with the audience is always a fix part of the concept. As in past years we were happy to welcome a prominent list of speakers:
Product development
Prof. Wim Poelman leads the chair of Product Realization at the University of Twente. He bridges the gap between product design and the building industry.
Prof. Andreas Fuchs (FAT Lab Stuttgart) will speak about his experience with developing building services integrated constructions for the façade industry.
As a third speaker in this session Prof. Anne Beim from the Centre of Industrial Architecture (CINARK) at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts will talk about how the needs for industrial processes can be introduced into architectural design strategies.
Material and Technology
Thermoplastic composites are important materials for many contemporary high-end applications in transportation, industry and healthcare. Prof. Remco Akkermann is head of the Thermo Plastic Composite Research Centre at the University Twente and will speek about the potential of this material for the building industry.
Hans van Rennes is Vice President of the famous car manufacturer Spycker. He will share his knowledge about building automobiles and answer our question as to which technologies could be transferred from this industry to façade construction.
Designing on nano-scale could be a description of what Prof. Dick Broer does. He is head of the Department for Functional Organic Materials & Devices at TU Einhoven and will share his visions about the wide range of possible applications of polymer technologies for building envelopes.
Process and Management
The constant stream of new developments is challenging current process and management strategies. Prof. Stephen Ledbetter is head of the Centre for Window and Cladding Technology, University of Bath. He will speak about their integration into a craftsmanship driven building industry.
Lars Anders is managing director of priedemann facade consult a façade consulting company doing business around the world. His lecture will be about the challenges we face when trying to realize the growing complexity of building envelope in practice.
Design disciplines and with them the façade industry increasingly depend on data creation, 3D simulations and communication. Prof. Peter Russell, RWTH Aachen, shares his vision on the influence of data management on design and building envelope performance.
Architecture and Design
Prof. Daniel Dendra, architect and co-founder of OpenSimSim. The concept is an open dissemination of knowledge. He will tell us about the chances of web based collaboration tools for architectural design.
The lecture of Kasper Guldager Jørgensen will focus on the role of the architect. He is head GNX innovation at 3XN Architects in Copenhagen and his task is the integration of new technologies in their design process.
Front is one of the leading façade design offices in New York. Founding Partner Bruce Nichol will finalize the conference with his vision on future building envelopes.
Next year the future envelope will be held in Bath / UK more informations will follow.

OpenSimSim - building knowledge
The internet changed many bastions of our every day life. Accessibility of information became much simpler and to most researchers it is available at a fingertip wherever they have access to the world wide web. Our vertical knowledge cathedrals turned into a series of large horizontal bazaars.
The talk will cover some of the downsides of the movement but mainly concentrate on the new possibilities and changed framework for researchers showing also examples of student works of the Dessau Institute of Architecture (DIA Dessau).
OpenSimSim is one of several examples covered in order to discuss emerging ways of sharing information and conducting research with the help of crowd sourcing and open source ideologies.Daniel Dendra will also talk about his own experience with projects such as the cloudscap.es award and introduce a new collaborative research program called Future City Lab (ftr.ct.lb).
The principles of Open innovation and Open Source naturally will lead into discussing the importance of copy right and intellectual properties in architecture and urban design.
