COPY & PASTE (a whole village)
Some time ago I was talking about the power of copy and remix http://anotherarchitect.tumblr.com/post/18037409677/remix-is-everywhere-there-are-this-days-when.
Of course it´s hard for architects to imagine that we CAN copy and by remixing it make it better. But again : WE SHOULD MAKE IT BETTER!
A developer in China mis-understood something in this line of thoughts and just copied a picturesque Austrian village in China. The funny thing about the story is that the village was copied secretly! I can imagine how the village was occupied by Chinese tourists with measure tapes and taking 360 degree views everywhere ;)
It´s sad to see that a country that is actually building most of the latest technology for the whole world and could with it´s economic power try to re-invent ways we do construction falls into the trap of copying the picturesque. This copycat probably did not hear about global warming and that we actually need to re-think the way we built today.

OUR BIGGEST COMPETITION EVER ….
Today the winning teams of the open international competition for a new park on the territory of the former airport Tempelhof were announced at a press conference.
Around 80 international offices participated in the competition with around 40% foreign teams and finally the jury selected 6 equal winning teams.
anOtherArchitect together with Base landscape (Paris) and Transsolar (Stuttgart) are one of the lucky winners to transform 300ha in the center of Berlin into a new park!
Similar to the title of the winning song at the European Song contest we are proposing a series of satellites that are slowly transforming the former airfield into an integrated part of the city. The satellites are part of the concept of an “AIR PARK” which is based on the feeling of height, the freedom of flying and the situations we explore while flying.
This is our biggest competition we won so far (300ha) but not the first one for Tempelhof - This is the second competition we participated for the transformation of Tempelhof and the second time we won the first round! Some of you might still know our proposal for a central amusement park for Berlin.
More information to come soon …

The city of Berlin launched a campaign called “viaBerlin” to attract more travelers to use Berlin airports for connection flights. It is advertising Berlin as the perfect stop-over for parties, culture, music, fairs etc.
This campaign is also inline with the strategy to open the new international terminal at Berlin Schönefeld “Berlin Brandenburg International”, close down all other airports and develop Berlin as an international hub for the East of Europe.
This strategy might be questioned with the success of small regional airports and cheap airlines but the decision is made. In 2008 Berlin Tempelhof was closed for air traffic - by 2012 Berlin Tegel should be closed as well.
In 2009 anOtherArchitect developed a strategy to connect all former airports with BBI to support the “viaBerlin” idea. The former airports Tempelhof and Tegel should become the new Cultural and Party hubs of Berlin. A Zeppelin shuttle should connect all stop-over passengers. This shuttle could also act as a more interesting transfer service to the new airport.

anOtherArchitect´s 15min of fame:
It was the day of the inauguration of Barak Obama - the 20th January 2009 - when our proposal for a urban development for the abandoned airport Berlin Tempelhof was in almost all the major newspapers in Germany.
Since it was a competition entry which was selected by the jury for the second stage we had to make sure we stay anonymous until recently. The whole story can now be read here:

Our proposal is one out of 12 winning projects (out of around 100) of the 1st stage of the urban design competition “Columbiadamm”. The 12 projects will be exhibited at the terminal building of former airport “Berlin - Tempelhof”. The airport was closed some months ago officially for aviation. Tempelhof was the first civic airport in the world. Roughly the size of the Tiergarten-Park the empty plot of several hectares is the biggest possible development site in Berlin at the moment.

The ideas competition was supposed to find answers how to deal with the urban development of the north tip of the site which is cut by the Columbiadam - Street.

The show will run from 20. - 22. January 2009.

Our proposal for a new Entertainment Strip in Berlin Tempelhof is all over the press today. Most of the media is concentrating on a small part of our proposal: A central red light district for Berlin. In our project the red light district is the pioneer program in order to re-urbanize the abandoned airport. References are central red-light districts that were starting points for gentrification processes in cities or act as a tourist magnet such as Amsterdam, Reeperbahn Hamburg, Soho London etc.

The competition is still anonymous at this point so there is no chance for a press statement.

In the internet stats show that our story is even No.1 hit at the online version of the German gossip newspaper: BILD.
